Keynote Speakers

Actors and long-time friends, Danny Glover and Felix Justice – In Conversation.

In discussing the importance of arts in education, actors and long-time friends Danny and Felix examine the intersections of Art, Culture and Activism. Using examples from their lives and some of the great works of literature, both men bring to life their devotion to the education of young people and the inspiration of the next generation of leaders in the world.  Danny Glover has been an actor on stage, TV and films and is best known for his roles in The Color Purple and Lethal Weapon. Danny is also a director, activist and humanitarian. Less well known is the fact that Danny has dyslexia and part of his presentation at the conference will focus on what it was like for him growing up with a learning disability.

Richard Lavoie M.A., M. Ed will be joining us for two mornings (Oct. 7th and 8th ) as our keynote speaker.

Richard Lavoie M.A., M. Ed holds three degrees in Special Education and has served as an administrator of residential programs for children with special needs for 30 years. Best known for his video, How Difficult Can This Be?: The F.A.T. City Workshop, Rick’s experiences have provided him with a “living laboratory” in which he developed and refined his methods and philosophies related to the education of adolescents with special needs. Rick will present two sessions at the conference; The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child and Last One Picked, First One Picked On: The Social Implications of Learning Disabilities. Rick’s sensitive and compelling message is sure to inspire.

Psychologist Symposium

Best Practices in the Assessment of Learning Disabilities and Co-morbid Conditions across the Lifespan Michael Zwiers, Ph.D., R. Psych. and Anne Price, Ph.D., R. Psych.

This full day Interactive Symposium for psychologists will focus on best practices in the assessment of learning disabilities across the lifespan, the communication of findings and diagnoses, and the consideration of co-morbidities. The day will offer a blend of information, current issues, and opportunities for discussion. Population-specific break-out groups will take up case studies, which will progress from more straight-forward LD profiles to more complex profiles with co-morbid presentations.
